All dentists are trained in treating the teeth and the gums. But less than 10% of dentists practicing in the United States have the necessary training and knowledge to correctly diagnose and treat these disorders. And that is because these disorders and their treatment are not taught to dental students during their course of dental school education. Our TMJ dentist, Sonny Eslampour DDS has had countless hours of education and training in diagnosing and treating these conditions.

TMJ Dentist – Treating Facial Pain

Pain in the head and neck area that is not coming from the teeth (e.g. impacted wisdom teeth, an infected tooth, fractured teeth, etc.) can be due to problems with the jaw joint itself. This is one of many conditions collectively referred to as TMJ or TMD.
Jaw pain can also stem from the jaw muscles rather than the joint itself. Another type of jaw pain has its origin in the nerves rather than the supporting structures. To successfully treat jaw pain, our doctor treats the cause and not just the symptoms.

Sleep Apnea Therapy – CPAP Alternative

Sleep apnea is a life-threatening medical condition and should be taken quite seriously. It affects children and adults. Gone untreated sleep apnea leads to serious medical consequences. Sleep apnea also disrupts the important “sleep cycle”. This incomplete sleep cycle leads to “brain fog” and that is because the brain is not fully rested. In children sleep apnea has been linked to ADD. In adults, sleep apnea has led to serious work-related accidents as well as an overall reduction in performance and productivity. Medical doctors treat this condition with CPAP. However, most patients discontinue using their CPAP because of how cumbersome it is. Treatment with oral appliances has been very successful for these patients.

Migraines – Tension Headaches

Headaches wreak havoc on the mind and the body. They can be due to the presence or absence of chemicals or substances. Any coffee drinker can vouch for the headache after 24 hours of no caffeine! Poor diet is another reason we get headaches. There are also headaches that are less well understood. Of these, migraines and cluster headaches are the hardest to treat. Tension headaches are the most common and thankfully most treatable. In treating headaches it is important to realize that for some there is no known cure and treatment is directed at managing the symptoms. Curiously though, a common finding in most headache sufferers is that they also experience jaw pain.
