Parkinson's Disease, Tourettes and TMJ

Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. The tremors usually start in one hand. Friends and relatives may notice a face with no expression or no swinging of the arms when the patient walks. Although Parkinson's associated with tremors, there is also a slowing or freezing of movement which also occurs.

Tourettes is a neurological disorder which is characterized by repetitive, stereotyped involuntary movements and vocalizations called "tics". This condition is usually first noticed in the children 6 years and older.

While there are no cures to date for either Parkinson's disease or Tourette's, there have been some evidence pointing to a potential link to TMJ Disorders. While it may be too early to theorize that one leads to another, patients who have been treated with specially designed dental splints have demonstrated a significant reduction in their symptoms.

Sonny Eslampour, DDS is a dentist with a sub-specialty in treatment of TMJ disorders and Sleep Apnea.
