Migraines: Management Techniques

Migraine sufferers have it probably the worst when it comes to headaches and the effect on their life style. Tension headaches while painful, are not nearly as life changing.

Migraines are the headaches that make you want to find a dark quiet place to lay down.  These headaches are so painful and debilitating that they have become a common household term. And some people even think of all headaches as just being Migraines.

Migraines are sometimes preceded by visual disturbances (i.e. flashes of light, blind spots) or tingling in extremities. These are referred to as "auras".

Migraine headaches are usually confined to one side only which can last up to 3 days. They have a pulsatile pounding quality (i.e. as you heart beats or pulsates, your headache pounds). As expected, physical activity or climbing stairs make it worse. Nausea is often present but vomiting might not be. There is also hypersensitivity to light and sound.

While the exact cause of migraines is not entirely known, both genetic and environmental factors are contributors. Involvement of Trigeminal Nerve (not to be confused with Trigeminal Neuralgia) is also suspected. Women are 3 times more likely than men to be affected. The migraine attacks usually starts early in life, but the age group most affected are those in their 30's.

Migraine Therapy and Management

Treatment of migraines often involves a multi faceted approach. Pain medications can be used to treat the immediate pain. Other medications are used to treat the migraine preventatively, meaning making it less likely to occur.

Life style changes to promote overall body health are encouraged.  Certain herbs and vitamins also have proven useful in treating migraine pain.

For migraine sufferers, it is important to realize that there is no single definitive cure.  Therapy revolves around making the migraine episodes manageable.
